How we make our books
A small studio, a few books at a time, and every page looked at twice.
Sara writes the stories
Each story starts with something real: a moment from family life that a small child is working through, like a new baby, a first day or the wait for the glue to dry. Sara writes it to be read aloud, so it has to sound good on the twentieth reading.
Blake creates the characters
Blake creates the characters and the art. Every character has a want, a worry and a way of talking, and the pictures stay faithful to them from the first page to the last.
The world is real
Sandpiper Point is made up, but it is built on the Southern California coast: kelp and sea otters, hermit crabs in tidepools, a canyon with a sycamore, a harbor with a low tide. When a character says something about an animal, the true fact is behind it.
Every page is reviewed
Before a book goes out, Sara and Blake look at every page: the words, the pictures, the page turns and the ending. Some books take a long time on purpose.
Made for the child in front of you
Each book is made for a specific age and says so, with the reason. We keep the stories calm, we do not preach, and we do not take sides on anything. A parent from any background should be able to read one and feel nothing is being pushed on their child.
